Gr. 3: Shapes in Space

  1. Hi Marnie! I love this lesson for perspective and space. Can you tell me more about how the students created the black and white rays? Are they collaged?

  2. Thanks, Amanda! I use a paper cutter to cut a bunch of wedges from black construction paper. I used to have the kids cut them, but it was so fussy and didn't seem to further their learning much. ;) The kids draw a tiny dot on their white 8"x8" paper with pencil. They position the black wedges so the tips touch the dot. This is the hardest part of the lesson! It's good practice with precision and you really need to emphasize it or they will opt for "good enough". :) They add glue stick on TOP of the wedge (avoiding the area that hangs off) and then flip it over and trim the excess. This helps to avoid a glue-y mess. I offer circle tracers, but kids can use any shape for the final details. Encourage them to cut and glue the smallest first (and so on) as they go. It helps to correct their overlap AND you won't end up with a bunch of loose shapes at the end of class if they don't finish. Hope this helps!
